High doses of derivatives of 2-nitroimidazoles and 5-nitroimidazoles induce serious spasmodic states in dogs. Marked degeneration of the Purkinje cells is evident. These findings cannot be reproduced in mice, rats, guinea pigs or rabbits. Among the 5-nitroimidazole derivatives leading to this effect in the dog there is one well known medicament, namely Metronidazole. Although it has been used universally for many years, no neurotoxic side effects have so far been reported. The alterations in the dog are therefore interpreted as an expression of a special sensitivity of this species.
