Most people have a natural aversion to the presence of rats, flies and mosquitoes in their environment. However, the continuous intrusion of these unwanted guests has conditioned their human hosts to tolerate them as unavoidable nuisances. That these pests may be the reservoirs or vectors of serious illness is well appreciated. Individual attempts to combat these underground, surface and airborne invaders are usually unsuccessful. In most countries the eradication or control of pests is left. to the initiative of governments and health agencies. This is at times a complex and unrewarding task. Its successful completion is, among other things, dependent on the cultural background, economic interests, civic training and social attitudes of the community included in the program. In Lebanon rats, flies and mosquitoes are considered mainly as nuisances, and to a lesser degree as possible health hazards. A brief analysis of the problems that these pests are likely to create will enlighten the public to demand the institution of better health programs in the country.
