Fifteen short-statured patients were grouped according to their GH reactivity to insulin-induced hypoglycemia and 1-proline loading (500 mg/kg) by mouth. One group comprised patients who elicited a normal GH response following 1-proline and who were indistinguishable from patent pituitary dwarfs whether the clinical appearance or GH response after induced hypoglycemia were considered. The possibility of a systemic hypersomatostatinism of cranial non-tumoral origin is evoked in these patients. Further studies and shortor even long-term courses of GH therapy are however necessary for convincing evidence.
