The effects of oral glycerol administered to 42 cataract patients prior to operation were investigated for time relationship between the ensuing ocular hypotension and blood changes in osmolarity, glucose and electrolytes. Significant ocular hypotension was found at 30 minutes following glycerol with a maximal effect at 60 minutes; slight rise in osmolarity of 4.4-8.2 mOsm/Kg H2O was found within the first hour with a maximal effect of 22.1-29.5 mOsm/Kg H2O occurring at 90-120 minutes. No correlation could be found between ocular hypotension and blood glucose and electrolytes. In view of the discrepancy in time relationship between changes in intra-ocular pressure and blood osmolarity it was suggested that other changes induced by glycerol may contribute to ocular hypotension.
