It was not without considerable apprehension that I, a new graduate nurse, decided to go to Vietnam to work in a civilian hospital. Despite this feeling, I responded to the request of the Church World Service for nurse volunteers. I believed that the struggle in Vietnam could not be won by military methods alone, and I recognized the acute need for nursing personnel to provide care for the civilian population.
