Various eco-development schemes set up in the Bilaspur Forest Circle are described. These are targeted towards village development and in particular towards the landless and the poor who are dependent of the forests for their livelihood. Successful joint forest management cannot be achieved without developing village resources in a holistic manner such as this. The schemes described, which mostly involve forestry affiliated activities, include tasar silkworm cultivation, lac cultivation, bamboo based industries, the exploitation of old sisal plantations, pisciculture, a women's nursery, and the establishment of grain banks and self help groups.
