Mohana village in Southern Nepal covers 70 ha and consists of 91 households. The layout of the village, the land use and the characteristics of the buildings were investigated in 1989. The layout and construction of the houses of typical farmers, landowners and landless farmworkers are described. The village is primarily self-sufficient in rice and most products are consumed within the village, except for mustard which is sold for cash. The introduction of irrigation facilities has brought about the replacement of rainfed rice with paddy rice and has enabled the introduction of more field crops into the rotations used, so increasing food resources and available cash.
