A diabetic clinic in a peripheral hospital

Of 37 women and 21 men with diabetes seen during 2.5 years, 12 were controlled by diet alone, 28, of whom 11 were obese, received drugs by mouth and 18 were insulin-dependent. Of the patients 40 were in the age group between 51 and 80 years old and all those treated by diet alone or with drugs were of late onset. Six patients died during the period, all from heart disease. There was good control in 31, "fair" control in 15 and poor control in 12 patients.
