Eighty-four prison volunteers with diagnosed mycoses of the feet were shown by KOH slide determination and culture to be infected with Trichophyton rubrum (34 cases), Candida albicans (6), Epidermophyton floccosum (3) and other dermatophytes (7). Clinical observations showed no significant difference in the efficacy of 1% haloprogin (an iodinated trichlorophenol compound) formulations and 1% tolnaftate sol. in topical treatment. However, the more objective laboratory parameters, namely KOH and culture determinations, showed the haloprogin-treated patients to have a significantly greater 27-day therapy cure rate and maintenance of cure 8 days after therapy was discontinued.
