The incidence of tinea pedis was examined in 385 male recruits entering military service. Dermatophytes were isolated from 24 (6%) men, 1/3 of whom had neither symptoms nor clinical signs of tinea pedis. A total of 210 soldiers were reexamined after 9 wk of basic training. Dermatophytes were isolated from 11 (5%) men, 9 of whom had been positive also on the first examination. None of the asymptomatic carriers discovered at the first examination had developed clinical disease. The prevailing dermatophyte isolated was Trichophyton rubrum.
