In conclusion, the most notable influence of alcohol in this experiment was to increase the oesophagotropism of NDPA. At the same time, no carcinogenicity of ethanol itself was detected. The somewhat higher percentage of lymphomas in group III is probably related to the longer .survival of mice given ethanol only. The mechanism of the carcinogenesis enhancing activity of ethanol is not clear at present. It is possible that alteration of cell membranes and increase of microsome enzyme activity may play a role in this process. It may also be related to impaired DNA repair, as suggested by Mufti et al. (1981). Whatever the underlying mechanism, it is important to keep in mind the possible intensification of carcinogenicity when the role of N-nitrosamines in human pathology is being evaluated.
