Investigation of alcohol metabolism in the rat with the help of radioactive C" ethyl alcohol has revealed the following information. (I) Intact animal experiments. Rate curves for the combustion of alcohol to carbon dioxide following a 1-g. per kg. oral dose: (a) 75 per cent oxidized in 5 hours; (b) 90 per cent oxidized in 10 hours; (c) no acceleration of complete alcohol oxidation in alcohol-habituated rats or in animals receiving pyruvate. (2) Tissue slice experiments. Carbon dioxide formation from alcohol: (a) liver and kidney, rapid oxidation; (b) heart and diaphragm, slight activity; (c) brain, no activity; (d) all organs, same degree of alcohol oxidation in normal and alcohol-habituated rats; (e) no stimulation of oxidation in liver by pyruvate
