The present study was designed to evaluate the therapeutic benefits of immunotherapy with Nocardia rubra cell-wall skeleton and irradiated allogeneic leukernic cells in adult patients with acute myelogenous leukemia. After complete remissions were induced and consolidated, the patients were randomly divided into two groups, one with maintenance chemotherapy alone (Control group) and the other with the same maintenance chemotherapy plus immunotherapy with Nocardia rubra cell-wall skeleton and irradiated allogeneic leukemic cells (immunotherapy group). From December 1978 to December 1981, 80 patients entered complete remissions; 32 patients in immunotherapy group and 34 patients in control group were eligible. The median remission duratiun for the immunotherapy group was 15 months compared with 11 months for the control group; comparable medians for survival were 30 and 19 months, respectively. The results show that the immunotherapy group had longer remission (P<0.10) and survived for a longer time (P<0.10) than the control group. Main adverse reactions were fever and skin lesions.
