Bovine demodicosis. A significant cause of lesions in hides and leather in Finland

The appearance of demodectic lesions observed in the skin of Finnish cattle and in bovine hides during leather processing is described. The lesions were concentrated in the shoulder region and appeared as firm rounded intradermal nodules usually between 0.2 and 1.0 cm in size. The nodules were usually covered by hair with a darkened epidermis around a small opening; inside numerous mites were present in a grey or yellow caseous substance. When the hides were examined by transmitted light the nodules appeared as dark spots of varying size. Although clinically the disease appears to be harmless it is a source of serious economic loss to the leather industry.
