The effect of oral administration of metanil yellow on the haemopoietic system of rats has been studied. Animals were fed metanil yellow, mixed in the routine laboratory diet, at concentrations of 0.0, 0.1, 0.5 and 3.0 %, daily for 90 days. No change in total leucocytes was observed with any of the concentrations of metanil yellow. However, with the 3 % level, differential counts showed a significant decrease in neutrophils and eosinophils and a significant increase in lymphocytes and monocytes. Plasma fibrinogen showed only an insignificant decrease with the 0.5 and 3.0 % levels. Coagulation time was prolonged with the 3.0 % dietary level. No change was noted in total erythrocytes, platelets, haemoglobin, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, bleeding time, prothrombin time and absolute values (MCV, MCH, MCHC). Heinz bodies were not observed.
