A natural focus of alveococcosis (alveolar echinococcosis) in Taĭmyr

There is a natural focus of Echinococcus multilocularis on the Taimyr peninsula in the USSR; in 1967-71, it was recovered from 65.1% of polar foxes, one of 5 dogs and 9.7% of wolves from a total of 1,135 wild mammals (representing 15 species) examined post-mortem. The larval stage was found in 2 of 158 Siberian lemmings. The main reservoir of infection in the wildlife cycle seems to be the polar fox. There is a danger of hydatid infection to hunters.
