Dzungar hamsters- an experimental model for alveococcosis and echinococcosis

Striped hairy-footed hamsters of the Central Asian subspecies (Phodopus sungorus campbelli Thomas) of both sexes were inoculated i.p. with protoscoleces of Alveococcus multilocularis and Echinoccus granulosus. Alveococcosis infection was produced in 79-100% of the hamsters depending on the number of protoscoleces inoculated. The weight of developing larvocysts was 34% of the weight of the hamster. Their development terminated by the end of the 3rd mo. postinoculation. Echinococcosis infection was in 73% of hamsters; maturation of larvocysts began late in the 8th mo. after inoculation and at this time their weight was 16% of that of the hamster and the diameter of the largest larvocysts was 8-11 mm. P. s. campbelli are proposed as a new laboratory model of alveococcosis and echinococcosis.
