Echinococcus multilocularis ova obtained from Vulpes vulpes from the Taldy-Kurgan region of the USSR and a filtrate prepared from mature protoscoleces were administered intraperitoneally to Sigmodon hispidus. They were 100% infective, mature protoscoleces being found on the 65th day (after infection with ova) and on the 43rd day (protoscoleces filtrate). 30% of young Mus musculus were infected by the ova and 100% by the filtrate, mature protoscoleces being found on day 50; the infection rate was not affected by the sex, but older animals were more resistant to infection. 15 of 18 Eutamias sibiricus developed secondary cysts, embryonic scoleces being found 150 days after intraperitoneal infection. One of 9 Mesocricetus auratus and 5 of 8 Rattus rattus were successfully infected when the intraperitoneal infection was preceded by 2 intramuscular injections of 25 mg/kg body-weight hydrocortisone; protoscoleces developed on days 97 and 29 respectively.
