Echinococcosis and alveococcosis present a serious public health problem in some parts of the Russian SFSR, particularly areas of the extreme north. Early detection of the patients and seroepidemiological surveys have become possible owing to the introduction of immunological diagnostic methods. Specification of the prevalence of these diseases and their incidence among certain contingents of the human population are discussed. Serological as well as clinical and roentgenological methods are now satisfactorily used in endemic areas in planned specific surveys of high risk groups. Prevention of echinocococcosis and alveococcosis is a complex problem which can be resolved only by the combined work of the medical and veterinary services, municipal services, cattlebreeding, hunting, fur-breeding farms and other interested services.
