Five years of fertility control with microdose norgestrel: An updated clinical review

Data on the outcome of pregnancy which was available for 123 of the 169 women showed that there were 96 normal, full-term infants including two who developed icterus neonatorum which subsided uneventfully, and two who weighed in excess of 10 pounds. There were also 18 abortions (13 spontaneous and five induced), three premature deliveries including one set of twins, one ectopic tubal pregnancy, and one delivery by section. Two infants were stillborn, one had bilateral clubfeet and one was hydrocephalic. There was no evidence of fetal masculinization or teratogenicity. To date, we have found that the daily continuous administration of 0.075 mg norgestrel offers an effective method of fertility control with minimal side effects aside from those associated with cycle control, and is a useful alternative to oral contraceptives containing estrogen.
