Cardiac alterations in swine which have eaten colza or canbra oil

Pigs were in 5 groups of 9, killed 7, 20, 45, 90 and 180 days after the start of the experiment, when they were about 80, 94, 119, 164 and 260 days old. From each group 3 animals were given groundnut oil, 3 rapeseed oil and 3 canbra oil, all at 13 to 15% by weight of the ration. Sections of the hearts were examined histologically.At the 7th and 20th days myocardial fibres showed excess fat, which diminished subsequently; the fatty deposit affected one fibre in 50 in the group on groundnut oil, one in 20 in the group on canbra oil and one in 8 or 10 in the group on rapeseed oil. Structural modifications in the myocardial fibres were seen from the 45th day onwards and increased. Optical microscopy showed changes in the staining properties of the fibre, and also swelling. Interstitial tissue was altered by granulomatous formations of histiocytes, fibroblasts and macrophages. From the 90th day collagenous sclerosis appeared. The pigs given groundnut oil did not show the last changes.
