16 patients suffering from threatened abortion due to ascertained placental insufficiency have been controlled by means of colpocytological examinations. 9 of these received a placebo, and in 7 cases (78%) the placental insufficiency resolved spontaneously while abortion occurred in 2 cases (22%). The other 7 patients received 6-dehydroprogesterone according to a dose schedule of 20-40 mg daily for 6-15 days and sometimes for an even longer period and for several cycles. Pregnancy continued regularly in all cases. 5 of these patients gave birth to perfectly normal female children, in particular, without any signs of masculinization.
