Azaperone (Stresnil) as a sedative for dogs

The effect of the neuroleptic Azaperone was tested on 60 healthy and 100 diseased, restless and aggressive dogs. The dosage in i. m. injection was 2-4 mg/kg per kg body weight, and orally 4-6 mg/kg per kg body weight. The amount of dosage was determined by the behaviour of the animal concerned and according to the degree of aggressiveness. The i. m. injection and the oral dosage mentioned achieved satisfactory sedation in the following indications: general clinical examination, special examination of the oral cavity, roentgen examination on side and frontal position, removal of dental tartar, i. v. injections, clipping, and treatment. The sedation was not sufficient for special examination of the pharyngeal cavity and the larynx, for roentgen examination on the back or for spine marrow puncture in very restless and aggressive animals. Research into healthy but aggressive beagles showed the collective aggressiveness disappeared for two hours after dosage with Azaperone. Side effects such as hyperpnoe, dribbling and vomiting were of no importance.
