This letter discusses the results of an investigation on the role of ribonucleotide reductase (RR) in bovine herpesvirus 2 (BHV-2) virulence. The results of eight separate experiments using assay duplicates to determine the RR activity of the BHV-2 strains are evaluated. Two avirulent BHV-2 viruses, the thymidine kinase-deficient BHV-2 (C290BU5) and a RR-negative BHV-2 (C290BUTK) are developed and they are both considered as potential vaccines against bovine herpes mammillitis infections.
