Production of Clostridium chauvoei antigen is described in detail. Guinea-pigs were vaccinated at various intervals with experimental and commercial vaccines containing Cl. chauvoei antigens of various quantities and qualities. Serum agglutination titres compared favourably with the protection given to twice-vaccinated guinea-pigs which were challenged with spores at 10 to 14 days after the second vaccination. The agglutination level which consistently appeared to indicate immunity to challenge as determined by guinea-pig survival was 0.5 mu litre of less of serum to agglutinate a standardized antigen, although this did vary with the immunization period.
