Evaluation of some immunologic parameters in children with recurrent otitis treated with spores of Bacillus subtilis

Certain immunological parameters were determined in 14 children with recurrent otitis media before and after two months' treatment with B. subtilis spores. Killing was defective in only one child and did not become normal after treatment. Three children showed deficiencies of chemotaxis which were corrected by treatment. Ten children had increased values for IgM and/or IgG while in one case IgA was low for the child's age; these findings were not corrected by B. subtilis treatment. The skin test for Candida was negative before treatment in 6 children in 3 of whom it became positive after treatment. Four children showed IgE specific for various allergens while total IgE were within normal limits. The mechanisms favoring recurrent otitis media in childhood are discussed, especially the relationship of this pathology to immunological deficits.
