Spores of B. natto were inoculated onto meat extract agar, germinated at 20 min of incubation at 37.degree. C and the outgrowth phase finished at about 120 min. Some spores inoculated into the ligated loops of the ileum in dogs were able to germinate, but died after germination. When inoculated into the ligated loops of the colon, spores failed to germinate. Spores were able to germinate, but died after germination in a medium prepared from the heated (120.degree. C for 20 min) or unheated contents of the ileum. When cultivated in a medium prepared from the heated contents of the colon, almost all spores germinated, but not when cultivated in unheated medium prepared from the colon.
