A letter responds to the review by Wolfenbarger and Phifer in the December 15, 2000, issue on the ecological risks and benefits of genetically modified (GM) plants. While scientists continue to argue over the risks of GM crops, dramatic decreases in pesticide use attained since the introduction of GM crops are still largely overlooked. By concentrating only on the potential ecological benefits of such crops, Wolfenbarger and Phifer ignored the other reasons American farmers have planted GM crops on millions of acres: reduced costs, improved yields, and ease of management.
