AIDS update: impact on African labour force to be "very severe"

A report discussed during the Ninth Regional Meeting confirmed the significant impact of AIDS on the economy and labor practices in Africa. The report, entitled ¿Action against HIV/AIDS in Africa: An initiative in the context of the world of work,¿ stated that the AIDS epidemic would result in increased absenteeism, female-headed households, labor costs for employers, and the bankruptcy of social security services. In addition, more children would become orphans and more would be forced into the active labor force. Likewise, the AIDS situation in Mauritius, Tanzania, Zambia, and Botswana were briefly discussed. The assembly¿s director-general mentioned that the HIV/AIDS pandemic challenges the concepts of compassion, solidarity, and social inclusion.
