Effect of heparin on the course of experimental bacterial peritonitis in rabbits

The authors carried out investigations on rabbits for establishing the effects of different heparin doses on the course of experimental peritonitis, which was produced surgically contaminating the peritoneal cavity with faecal contents from the cut appendix. Heparin was given subcutaneously during 3 days and in one intraperitoneal injection in doses of 100 and 100 u/kg of body weight. It was found that large doses of hepania reduced the mortality of the animals in relation to controls and to the group receiving lew heparin doses. In the rabbits receiving heparin in doses of 1000 u/kg the tendency for development of intraperitoneal adhesions was lower.
