The results of studies conducted for the purpose of comparing NewCastle disease vaccines inactivated with ßpropiolactone (BPL) and with formalin (F) are presented. Under the conditions of the experimental design BPL proved to be a better killing agent than F in that vaccines prepared from NDV infected amnioallantoic fluids and inactivated with 0.1% BPL for 2 hours at 37°C maintained highest hemagglutinin titers and evoked more satisfactory immune responses than those inactivated with 0.05% or 0.2% F. As the safety of BPL vaccines is concerned treatment with BPL 0.1% of experimentally infected amnioallantoic fluids proved to be effective against the commonest contaminants of the embryonating eggs (S. pullorum, Myc. gallisepticum, leukosis viruses).
