Clinical trial of the protective role of polyvalent pneumococcal vaccine in sickle cell anaemia patients in Zambia

In this study pneumococci were isolated from the throat swab cultures of 15 patients.out of 123 patients with sickle cell anaemia. Seven of these pneumococci cultures were isolated from a vaccinated group of patients and 8 from non-vaccinated patients. The vaccine type strains isolated in the vaccinated patients were types 6 and 23. The majority (66.6%) of the pneumococci isolated in this study were not present in the vaccine. It therefore appears that the present polyvalent pneumococcal vaccine (Pneumovax, MSD) is of limited value in Zambian patients with sickle cell anaemia.
