The efficacy and safety of i.v. pentoxifylline (Trental) was studied in 20 cases of homozygous Hb SS sickle cell disease in acute venocclusive crises. Six patients were pain free in 24 h, 9 within 48 h, i.e., 75% showed a good response while 4 patients showed significant improvement with relation to duration of previous painful episodes. One patient had periorbital edema and was withdrawn from the study. Pentoxifylline holds promise in the treatment of painful crises in sickle cell disease.
