Trichophyton tonsurans as a cause of onychomycosis

A case is reported in a 41-year-old Vietnamese man, resident in Germany for 20 years, who had tinea unguium affecting both great toenails and tinea inguinalis caused by T. tonsurans . He was treated with oral itraconazole (200 mg twice daily) for 1 week followed by a 3-week break. Clinical and mycological improvement was observed after 3 courses of this treatment regimen. Six months later the patient relapsed. Following susceptibility testing of the T. tonsurans isolates from the groin and nails, a second course of antimycotic treatment was then started with oral terbinafine (250 mg/d).
