The part played by human milk and breast feeding in the overall nutrition problem, the protective effect afforded by breast feeding against infant protein-calorie malnutrition (severe syndromes of kwashiorkor, marasmus, diarrhoea), infections, obesity, etc., lactation as a means of contraception, and the economic significance of breast feeding are discussed. Human milk should be recognized as a national resource in economic, agronomic and nutritional planning. Campaigns for the promotion of breast feeding should be developed.
