Evaluation of levamisole against Metastrongylus spp. in swine

Twenty-six pigs assumed to be naturally infected with Metastrongylus were allotted by weight to three groups: two groups serving as principals for treatment with two different levamisole preparations and one group serving as untreated controls. The untreated pigs harboured a mean population of 192 adult lungworms and 36 immature 5th-stage larvae. Pigs treated with levamisole HC1 at 8 mg/kg of body weight given in 1 gallon of drinking water harboured a mean population of one adult lungworm. Pigs treated with levamisole resinate fed in a pelleted ration (0.08% levamisole HC1 equivalent) at the rate of 0.45 kg/45 kg of body weight harboured a mean population of 1.8 adult lungworms and 0.1 immature 5th-stage larvae. Palatability was not a problem with either the medicated feed or drinking water.
