Cytodiagnosis of microfilaria of the breast from a needle aspirate

The case is described from India of a 30-year-old woman with a breast cyst. All clinical and laboratory investigations were normal except for mild eosinophilia. Fine needle aspiration was performed and revealed the presence of several microfilariae (likely to be Wuchereria bancrofti), although 3 consecutive night blood samples failed to demonstrate microfilaraemia. Histologic examination of the cyst showed features of a normal benign breast cyst, with no parasites. It is concluded that the presence of microfilariae was incidental.
