A study of the microfilariae of Wuchereria bancrofti and Onchocerca volvulus in blood, skin-snips and hydrocele fluid indicated that the position of the nerve ring is the most reliable means of differentiation. In microfilariae of W. bancrofti, the nerve ring lies at a distance of about 25% of the total body length measured from the head; the corresponding figure for microfilariae of O. volvulus is 20%.
