Microfilaria in a thyroid aspirate smear: an unusual finding

A 27-year-old Indian woman presented with a 6-year history of thyroid enlargement. The patient was euthyroid. Fine needle aspiration demonstrated a single microfilaria. A diagnosis of nodular goitre with microfilariae was made and the patient was treated with diethylcarbamazine. A partial thyroidectomy was then performed. Although the finding of a single microfilaria was incidental, it undoubtedly enabled medical treatment to be started so that the infection did not progress.
