DDT in granular form was applied from the air to water reservoirs at a dosage of 5 kg/ha in the vicinity of Mirny in the Yakutsk ASSR in 1969-1970, and resulted in a complete kill of larvae of Aedes within 24 h. Samples of the surface and bottom layers of the water, and vegetation and soil were taken several times before and after treatment within the space of a month for measurement of the DDT content. The results of chemical analysis showed that DDT was not present either in the surface layer or in the aquatic vegetation. The content of DDT in the bottom layer and silt was 0.001-0.007 mg/l and 0.5-1.1 ml/kg, respectively. A study of the populations of the organisms living in water that had been treated showed that those that were distributed throughout the depth of water were outside the zone affected by the granulated DDT, whereas the bottom-dwelling Chironomids died after the water was treated.
