The author observed larvae of Aedes albopictus in Hawaii dying of starvation in container-breeding habitats where the green alga Kirchneriella irregularis was the dominant species of phytoplankton. From this, he proposes that in some habitats some species of algae (e.g. those in the genera Kirchneriella, Scenedesmus, Coelastrum, Dactylococcus, Elakotothrix, Tetrallantos and Tetradesmus) which are indigestible for mosquito larvae might be encouraged at the expense of other, more digestible algae, thus providing a means of reducing larval mosquito populations.
