Use of the herbicide, simazine, for mosquito control

Herbicide simazine was tested as a chemical means for control of emergence of malarial mosquitoes [Anopheles maculipennis, Culex pipiens, Aedes caspius] in large and small drainage ditches. An aqueous suspension of 50% moistening powder of simazine in an amount of 15 kg of the active substance per 1 ha of water surface as well as powder were used. Hydrophytes [Phragmite communis, Ceratophyllum demensum, Potamogetou pectinotus, P. crispus, Lemma minor, Spirodela polyruhiza] died within 3-6 wk after 2 treatments. Complete death of hydrophytes and disappearance of larvae of malarial mosquitoes was observed after 3 treatments in the 2nd and 3rd seasons. More effective is a spring treatment with powdered simazine by spraying the substance on the root system of giant lineids.
