In a series of tests carried out in the Soviet Union in 1966-70, granular formulations of DDT, malathion (carbofos), dichlorvos (DDVP), trichlorphon (chlorofos) and trichlofos [O-ethyl O-methyl O-2,4,5-trichlorophenyl phosphorothioate] proved superior to emulsion formulations for control of Aedes larvae. The three most toxic compounds in granular formulations were malathion, trichlofos and dichlorvos, and the minimum application rates that caused 100% mortality of larvae within 48 h were 0.127 kg/ha for malathion, 0.141 for trichlofos and 0.2 for dichlorvos.Details are given of field tests in 1970-71 in which granular formulations were applied from aircraft for control of larvae of Aedes (mainly A. hexodontus Dyar, A. communis (Deg.) and A. pionips Dyar) in a variety of places in north-western Yakutia. Granules containing 2% malathion applied at 0.131 kg toxicant/ha caused 100% mortality of larvae in 72 h, granules containing 5% trichlofos applied at 0.232 kg toxicant/ha caused 100% mortality in 48 h and those containing 10% DDT applied at 0.5 kg toxicant/ha caused 100% mortality in 24 h. The first two are regarded as the most effective, and for control of Aedes in north-western Yakutia the recommended application rates in kg toxicant/ha are 0.1-0.15 for granules containing 2% malathion and 0.2-0.25 for those containing 5% trichlofos.
