The system of formal education in India is considered to serve only the interests of the elitist groups constituting the organized sector of the economy, and not relevant to improving the conditions of the majority of the masses in the unorganized sector. The nature and potential of non-formal education in the process of social change are explained. Evidence is provided that non-formal education is growing as an international movement for liberation in developing countries.
