Supporting the Overton theory, the narcotic potencies of aliphatic alcohols and their alkyl esters increase in homologous series in tadpoles. Data are presented on the median narcotic and lethal quantities of the aliphatic alcohols and their alkyl esters in rabbits. In general, it would appear that these effects are produced by the intact esters, and not by the corresponding alcohols from which they have been prepared. The Therapeutic Index values appear to be very low.
