Age factors in relation to physical development and gonadotropic and ovarian function in girls

The authors 'compared the physical and sexual development in 177 apparently healthy girls aged from 7 to 18 years. The assessment was carried out according to the data of anthropometry, physical status and functional activity of the hypophysis-ovarian system by the urinary excretion of gonadotropins and ovarian steroids (pregnandiol and estrogens). The periods of 9,11-42 and 14 years were characterized by marked concomitant increase of the growth 'rate, indices of general physical development, enlargement of the pelvis, and origination and development of secondary sexual signs, increase of total gonadotropic activity of the urine and of the hiarmanal activity of the ovaries. There was a definite correlation between the 'physical development and age changes .of the hormonal activity of the hypophysis and ovaries. There proved to exist a close relationship between the general physical and sexual development of children, enlargement of the pelvis and development of endocrine correlations caused by the establishment of reproductive function associated with age.
