Comparison of the effects of xylazine and acetylpromazine maleate in the horse

The value of i/v (1.1 mg/kg) and i/m (2.2 mg/kg) xylazine and i/v acepromazine maleate (0.066 mg/kg) as sedatives for use with barbiturate and inhalation anaesthesia in the horse was investigated. The i/v administration of xylazine together with atropine sulphate (0.011 mg/kg) was the most efficient sedative and did not produce adverse effects on the respiratory or cardiovascular systems. Acepromazine maleate induced less efficient, but satisfactory, sedation and was associated with greater respiratory depression and cardiovascular instability than xylazine.
