Six horses were injected with xylazine i/v, followed after 21/2 min by thiopental sodium i/v. All animals lay down within 1-2 min and were positioned in lateral recumbency. The horses were electrically stimulated by means of electrodes with voltages up to 80 v at 5-min intervals until the horses had been recumbent for 20 min. Thereafter, stimulation was at 2-min intervals until awareness was indicated. No animal displayed any response until after 15 - 20 min. Horses were also anaesthetized with this combination in the field. A combination of 0.5 mg/lb xylazine and 2 mg/lb thiopental sodium is recommended for 15 - 20 min of anaesthesia.
