The canine eye develops in a manner similar to the human eye, apart from the timing of certain developmental events. By the end of the first third of gestation, the embryonic canine eye is in the earliest stage of development (optic cup and lens vesicle stage). At term, the eye of the foetus, although small in size, is almost fully developed. Retinal maturation takes place in the early postnatal period and proceeds from the central to the peripheral regions. Slender rod and cone inner and outer segments are present in the central retina by 16 days after birth and in the peripheral retina after 35 days.
