Methenamine hippurate (Haiprex) in a. dose of two 250 mg tablets four times daily was compared with tablettae phenylsalicylatis comp. (camphoric acid 75 mg, methenamine 75 mg, phenylsalicylate 75 mg and benzocaine 10 mg) given as 2 tablets 4 times daily in a group comparative, double-blind clinical trial with random allocation. The material was composed of 70 patients with preoperative sterile urine and 16 patients who were already preoperatively infected. They underwent prostatectomy or transurethral resection of the prostate. The treatment was given the first ten days after operation. The degree of postoperative bacteriuria was evaluated. Methenamine hippurate (Haiprex) was shown to have the same effect as tablettae phenylsalicylatis comp., the effectiveness of which has been documented by others in another trial on similar patients. Sideeffects were few. Methenamine hippurate (Haiprex) is useful in the reduction of bacteriuria following surgery of the prostate.
